Behind the music is the musician. Behind the recorded song is the
producer, engineer, and artist, who sometimes chooses to wear all three hats. The right performance can give any poorly recorded song the energy it needs to become a classic, but it’s the careful application of audio effects that makes everything sound cohesive. We use effects to fix, fit, and feature elements in the mix. Through clever manipulations of time and dynamics we can make a mundane performance grab your ears or bring your mind to a spacey place.

Each song on this album features a specific audio effect produced by legendary effects company, Eventide. Since 1971 they have continually innovated, revolutionizing the industry with products such as the H910, H3000, H9, and H9000. Headsnack and Primo Sol are both Eventide fanboys and thought it would be fun to try to create music by using one effect per song, on multiple instruments and even vocals. That might seem like overkill, but that’s entirely the point.

We sourced all the effects for this album from Eventide’s H9 Bundle, which is a collection of audio plug-ins ported from their H9 Max stompbox. Each title in this family of effects have a similar graphic interface along with innovative real-time controls that beg you to “play the plug-in,” which we did. We used each of these effects as instruments, warping tones and time to make things more (and sometimes less) musical.

There is an immediacy to this project because many of the songs were created during a frantic, two-to-four-week creative burst, from concept to final mix. The songs are all collaborative efforts created from two different studios (and a few hotel rooms) with the help of a shared iCloud folder and countless iMessages.
